Wab Kinew Needs to Explain Selinger Era Campaign Team: NDP’s choice of spokesperson confirms there is nothing new about Wab Kinew

A member of Wab Kinew’s senior campaign team was revealed yesterday and it confirms that, under his leadership, the NDP is the same broken party of chaos and dysfunction as it was under Greg Selinger.

Former NDP Cabinet Minister Erin Selby was quoted in the media yesterday as the spokesperson for Wab Kinew and the NDP campaign. Prior to assuming her current role as a union boss, Selby oversaw the longest Emergency Room wait times in Canada as Greg Selinger’s Minister of Health. And she was part of the NDP government that promised not to raise the PST and then, as soon as they were re- elected, broke their word.

Selby was also a “Rebel 5” cabinet minister who resigned to protest her own party and plunged the NDP into a state of internal chaos. She is closely linked with fellow NDP Rebel Stan Struthers, who Manitobans have come to know as “Minister Tickles” after a series of allegations that he repeatedly touched women inappropriately while serving as an NDP cabinet minister.

Wab Kinew says that both he and his party have turned over a new leaf, but this revelation raises some troubling questions that Kinew must answer. Namely:

• Does hiring Greg Selinger’s former health minister as a senior campaign team member confirm that Wab Kinew wants to go back to the days when Manitoba had the longest ER wait times in Canada?
• While serving as the NDP’s campaign spokesperson, is Ms. Selby still being paid by her union employer – the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 832?
• Do other Selinger-era ministers like Stan Struthers also have a role on Wab Kinew’s NDP
campaign team?

Wab Kinew has tried to hide from his personal and political record, and he wants you to believe that he and the NDP have changed. But changing your party’s colors on your campaign van doesn’t mean the NDP has changed. Manitobans overwhelmingly rejected Greg Selinger’s NDP in 2016 and they haven’t forgotten the mess left by the former government.

Wab Kinew needs to explain why he is recycling Greg Selinger’s failed policies and dysfunctional team.
